Pros
Rosso Coffee Roasters is a Canadian roaster who consistently has an incredibly strong line up of coffees—many of which are direct trade and highly rated. This anaerobic Colombian coffee was big, bold and a whole lot of fun to explore.
The coffee began with an incredibly strong fragrance that featured notes of cherries, pomegranates and subtle citrus and was a great foreshadowing of the experience to come. The boldness of the coffee carried through to the flavor, which reminded me of cherries, dark fruit, red wine, citrus and some underlying floral notes. The acidity was complex and citrus-toned and the sweetness bold and fruit-toned. The body was lush and full and seemed to shout with every sip, “I’m here and I’m ready to party.” The finish featured notes of lingering sweetness, but also some subtle astringency. The coffee shined best as a pour over, but also led to a bold espresso that was a bit more cocoa-toned.
The Bottom Line
La Esperanza Natural Anaerobic Java was quite the coffee to explore. It was one of the more wild and adventurous coffees I’ve tried recently and while I don’t know if it would be a “daily drinker” for me, it was one of my favorite to mix in throughout my coffee routine.
