Pros

  • Intense citrus notes
  • Complex sweetness

Manhattan Coffee is a roaster based out of Rotterdam in the Netherlands and was the April 2021 coffee through my Yonder Coffee subscription.

The coffee began with a rich, sweet fragrance that reminded me of candied oranges. While the flavor notes listed on the bag mentioned lychee, raspberry and Turkish delight, the dominate flavor I tasted was citrus in nature. Intense notes of lemon and orange citrus dominated the experience for me. I still tasted the raspberry notes, but they paled in comparison to the sweet citrus notes that overwhelmed the cup and reminded me of candied oranges and lemon drops. The coffee had a lovely sweet-tart acidity that was strong throughout. It was light and bright and as the coffee cooled, the citrus notes and sweetness had wonderful evolutions; every attribute opened up in complexity. I enjoyed the coffee a lot as pour over, but also particularly as an AeroPress brew (both iced and hot).

The Bottom Line

It is coffees like this one that has made Colombia one of my favorite origins for coffee over the past year. It’s complexity, sweetness and delicious flavor profile made this coffee truly one to savor.
