Folly Coffee keeps a consistent rotation of product offerings throughout the year and instead rotates what coffees go into each product as the season and inventory changes (while keeping the style/profile of the coffee consistent). SOB Espresso is a single origin blend, which means the coffee is all from a single country, but a blend of either different coffees or different roasts. SOB Espresso is a single coffee, but Folly roasts “a portion of it light to bring out the best flavors of the origin, and roast the remaining portion darker and more developed to bring out a rich, smooth depth of flavor.”1 SOB Espresso’s profile is intended to be consistently rich, smooth & intricate.

The coffee begins with a slightly muted fragrance that was smooth and full of nutty chocolate notes. The flavor was deeply chocolate with notes that reminded me of chocolate fudge. It was creamy, smooth and had hints of subtle citrus. The brightness was mild, but grew more pronounced as the coffee cooled. The mouthfeel was rich, full and overall quite satisfying. It fills the mouth and sits heavy on the tongue with every sip.

The chocolate notes are the dominate attributes in the creamy sweetness, but there was also more subtle notes of citrus and fruit as well. The intricacy of the multi-roast is present in the complexity of the coffee, which is a wonderful pairing of a smooth chocolate profile with the crisp, sweet citrus and fruitier elements.

I tried the coffee in a variety of brew methods and even though it is an espresso roast, I found it worked best in pour over. That said, it still made an excellent espresso that was sweet, creamy and an excellent milk carrier.

The Bottom Line

SOB Espresso is a delicious single origin blend that is extremely balanced and flexible. Folly did a great job on executing the desired profile of the coffee: rich, smooth and intricate.
