Pros

  • Incredibly complexity
  • Mix of deep fruit and earthy/tobacco notes throughout

In January of this year the second National Yemen Coffee Auction took place. I had a chance to sample roast and cup all of the coffees before the auction and was blown away by their quality. They all had the depth and complexity so unique to Yemen. There were a few of the lots that especially caught my attention and I wanted to do everything I could to share them with others in the Pull & Pour Coffee Club. I was lucky enough to win two of the lots (you can read about the process here)—the only United States company to win a lot. This is the first lot we’ll feature and the highest scoring of the two. The entire lot was only 45lb, so this truly is a one-of-a-kind coffee. This coffee will be available through the coffee club on Monday, February 19. Once the lot sells out there is no more of the coffee anywhere in the world. Be sure to join the free coffee club before Monday to have a chance to pick up this incredibly special coffee.

Here’s a bit more about my experience with the coffee:

The coffee begins with rustic aromatics of complex stone fruit and cedarwood. The flavor profile has so much complexity it is hard to distill down to a few descriptors. The plum and earthy cedarwood qualities persist in the flavor, but it also has other deep fruit notes mixed in. The mouthfeel reminded me a lot of drinking a big-bodied red wine like a Cabernet and there was an underlying decadent sweetness that reminded me of Amaretto. There is also an underlying sweet spice that reminds me of sweet pipe tobacco. Sweet pipe tobacco is one of my favorite flavor attributes uniquely present in the most special Yemenite coffees. As with the best coffees, this one evolves within every sip and as the coffee cools. It’s a complex, immersive drinking experience and I’ve savored every brew of it.

Overall I am so excited to be able to share this rare and outstanding coffee with the club. The coffee is extremely limited with only 135 jars available. To have a chance to pick it up, be sure to join the free Pull & Pour Coffee Club. If you missed this special release, the second Yemen drop will be coming in a few months—as well as many other amazing coffees. Be sure to join the coffee club to not miss any future offerings!
