Pros
This Java comes from a small micro-lot in the Amazonas region of Peru. Miraflores Coffee Farm sits in a perfect oasis to grow coffee—especially the Java varietal. This Java encompasses much of what you’d expect in a Java—slightly rustic, bold fruit notes & a heavy body—but also some unique characteristics that make it dynamic and exciting.
The coffee began with punchy aromatics that reminded me a bit of apricots and stewed fruit. The dynamic nature of the coffee comes through immediately with the first sip. The flavor is strong with notes of grape soda, stone fruit, and florals that present themselves more towards the finish. There is a tart acidity that builds towards the finish but is balanced nicely by the coffee’s grape candy-like sweetness. The big body is one of the most dominant characteristics of the coffee (as you would expect with a Java varietal) with each sip sitting heavy in the mouth.
The Bottom Line
Overall the coffee is wonderfully complex with a wonderful interplay between the candy-like fruit sweetness and floral elements. It evolves nicely throughout each sip and as the coffee cools.
Peruvian coffees can be a bit boring I’ve found, but this coffee is anything but that. It is one of the most exciting and dynamic coffees I’ve tried from Peru in a long time and one I’ll enjoy the entire bag through.
