I had heard about the roaster Apollon’s Gold Specialty Coffee from multiple different people and finally decided it was time to try out their coffee. Over Thanksgiving I purchased their Black Friday sample pack, which included a variety of their offerings. This Cup of Excellence winner from Peru stood as a really unique and delicious cup both for its taste profile and sparkling sweetness.
The coffee began with a sweet, slightly earthy fragrance that reminded me a bit of pear and was quite unique. In the flavor I tasted notes of pineapple, citrus, subtle berry and floral. It had an intense slightly tart, sparkling acidity reminiscent of lemon. The sparkling acidity gave way to a stronger sweetness as the coffee cooled. The body was light and crisp and the sweetness featured much of the same sparkle from the acidity; it reminded me of a slightly sour lemon candy—intense sweetness with a little pucker from the tart acidity. The cup had some really nice citrus complexity and I really enjoyed the evolution of the sweetness within each sip and as the coffee cooled.
The Bottom Line
My first experience with Apollon’s Gold Specialty Coffee was a great one. I enjoyed each of their coffees, especially this complex and sparkling beauty from Peru.
