Pros
Coffee + Tales is a subscription service that features Asia’s best micro-roasters. They offer filter or espresso-focused subscription options in a variety of sizes. A few weeks ago they sent two of their filter coffees from So So Good Coffee Company for me to try. The two coffees were both from Indonesia and featured experimental processing. Both were incredibly unique and wild coffees that were a lot of fun to enjoy and explore. This Kamala was especially intense with one of the more unique flavor profiles I’ve tried recently.
The coffee began with a high-intensity fragrance that was tropical, a bit funky and reminded me of overripe fruit. The taste included a barrage of intense flavors ranging from tropical fruit, dry white wine, mango and a mix of fermented fruits. The acidity was sharp, but not overpowering with a lemon citrus-tone. The full body was supported by an intense fruit-toned sweetness. The dry sweet finish lingered long after every sip. The coffee was incredibly unique with some flavor combinations I am not sure I have experience before in a coffee. It had some amazing depth and a lovely evolution as the coffee cooled.
The Bottom Line
Indonesia Java Kamala was an incredibly unique and exciting coffee. It definitely wouldn’t appeal to everyone and may be a bit off-putting to some, but for those that enjoy an adventurous cup, this is a great one to try. Coffee + Tales seems like a great subscription to try some roasters that wouldn’t be available to a US audience otherwise.
