I am always on the hunt for delicious and unique coffees—and I get to try a lot of them as I work on reviews for Pull & Pour. Every once in a while though, a truly special coffee comes my way that really sets itself a part from the others. Gold Mountain Brix Breaker from Ross Street Roasting Co is one of those coffees. As Ross Street shares on their website, “‘Brix’ is a scale that measures sugar content of a liquid, using devices called refractometers. The tree variety that produces this coffee grows cherries with very high levels of sugar content, ‘breaking’ the Brix scale with their sweetness!”1—hence the coffee’s name, Brix Breaker. And it really is the sweetness in this coffee that sets it apart.

The coffee begins with a medium intensity aroma of apple and pecan. Sweetness is present from the beginning though and accompanies the aroma changing the apple and pecans to be almost caramel apple and candied pecans. As I moved to tasting the coffee, the sweetness became even more pronounced and paired with the notes of apple, stone fruit and subtle floral.

The coffee has a nice, crisp apple sweet-toned acidity and has a richly sweet structure and a tea-like, smooth body. The finish is quick, but the sweetness carries through to the end.

The Bottom Line

I’ve had people ask how coffee, which is naturally more bitter in nature could have sweetness as a key attribute. A coffee like Gold Mountain is a perfect example; its sweetness is undeniable. If you are looking for a unique, special coffee to try, this one is absolutely worth checking out.
