Pros

  • Fruit bomb
  • Strong aroma

Cons

  • Lacks complexity

This is the second coffee I’ve had the opportunity to try from West Oak and another coffee courtesy of my Crema.co subscription.

The coffee is a true fruit bomb from beginning to end. It begins with a strong aroma filled with blueberry sweetness. The aroma also reminded me of rock candy from when I was a kid. The flavor is a blueberry fruit bomb through and through. There are other berry notes mixed in, but besides that, I had a hard time tasting anything else. If you enjoy a fruit-forward coffee though as I do, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

The acidity is strong and bright as you’d expect in a naturally processed coffee, but also well-balanced. It has a smooth, medium body and a sugar cane sweetness. The aftertaste is fairly quick, but bright. The coffee works well in a variety of pour over methods and was a delicious espresso filled with similar berry notes.

The Bottom Line

Naturally processed Ethiopian coffees that contain strong notes of berry and high acidity are some of my favorite. As a result, I really enjoyed this coffee. There is no denying though that this coffee lacks some of the complexity you’d usually expect in a high-end coffee simply because it is so overpowered by its berry notes.
