Pros
Coffee Bros is a relatively new roaster based out of New York. They began roasting in 2019 and already have an impressive rotating selection of over ten coffees. I got to try a few of their blends and single origin offerings over the past few weeks. While I almost always gravitate to single origin options, I was especially impressed with a few of the blends Coffee Bros shared. This Espresso Roast is a blend of coffees from Ethiopia and Colombia.
The coffee begins with a sweet & creamy fragrance with notes of vanilla, raw sugar, strawberry and chocolate. It was a robust fragrance with a lot of complexity. The flavor had a deep, rounded dark chocolate-toned profile with notes of vanilla and berries supporting it. As the coffee cooled to room temperature, the dark chocolate gave way a bit and the sweeter vanilla and berry notes really shown through. While it is marketed as an espresso roast and worked well for espresso, I found it worked exceptionally well in the AeroPress and pour over. The chocolate and raw sugar sweetness could really be amplified in some of the cleaner pour over methods, which created a cup that was syrupy and sweet. The gently pungent acidity was sharp at the front, but immediately started to fade back. It lingered with the sweetness in the aftertaste though.
The Bottom Line
Espresso Roast from Coffee Bros is anything, but only for espresso. It was bright, sweet and shined in pretty much every brew method I threw at it.
