Pros

  • Approachable, yet unique
  • Rich chocolate profile throughout

Khomanta Coffee is a roaster based out of my home state of Missouri with an incredibly cool business model. All of their coffees come from Peru and they give back a large portion of the proceeds from every coffee sale to the producer. They call it “relationship coffee” and 30% of the profits made from the coffee goes directly into the producer’s pockets and their community. I tried a few of their coffees back in 2019 and was excited to have a chance to try another one this summer.

The coffee began with a rich and strong chocolate fragrance with orange citrus mixed in. During brewing I noticed floral aromas as well. The flavor featured more of the rich chocolate and lemon citrus with a subtle tartness. The body was silky & full with a smooth and balanced profile. The acidity was citrus-toned, crisp and a bit stronger than I expected given the profile of the coffee. The coffee was quite sweet with a chocolate/honey sweetness. The aftertaste lingered and featured the sweetness and acidity prominently with floral undertones. I brewed the coffee in a variety of pour over methods, as well as AeroPress; I really enjoyed the richness that came through in the AeroPress.

The Bottom Line

El Limón was a delicious coffee. While it wasn’t the most complex or wild coffee I’ve had recently, it was balanced, rich and sweet—a perfect balance weight to some of the more “out there” coffees.
