Pros

  • Vibrant & sweet
  • Approachable

Oak & Bond is well known for their barrel-aged coffee (which is the best I’ve ever had), but they also have some quality single origin options. This Colombian coffee sported notes of cherry, honeysuckle, almond, brown sugar and chocolate on the bag—a unique and delicious combination that I knew I had to try.

The chocolate and cherry notes were immediately present upon opening the bag. They were also both covered in a sweetness that overwhelmed the fragrance. In the flavor I tasted almost every flavor listed on the bag—chocolate and almond, but also orange citrus and floral undertones. There was a vibrant acidity, but nothing overpowering and overall the coffee was extremely balanced and approachable. (I find the balance of a bright, vibrant coffee, yet one that is balanced and approachable very difficult to strike, so I always appreciate when a roaster nails it.) The sweetness reminded me of molasses and chocolate; it was rich and grew as the sip progressed, lingering long into the finish.

The coffee worked well in a variety of brew methods as well. I enjoyed it in each of the pour over methods I tried and the espresso led to a sweet, orange-focused shot with notes of chocolate that paired well with cream, but also was quite tasty by itself.

The Bottom Line

Colombia Buesaco is a coffee that would appeal to almost any specialty coffee enthusiast. It had the bright, citrus, sweet elements, but also a robust body, rich chocolate notes and approachable profile. Oak & Bond did an amazing job roasting this coffee to find this special balance.
