Onyx has been a long-time favorite of mine and I’ve always been impressed with their offerings. I have tried a lot of more exotic coffees recently with my Crema.co account and was excited to try a more balanced and approachable coffee from one of my favorite South American origins.
The coffee began with a chocolate and honey fragrance that had some earthy notes as I began to brew. The chocolate and honey carried over to the flavor where I also tasted some mild notes of tropical fruit. The coffee has a very balanced acidity that builds a bit towards the end of each sip. The finish was fairly quick, but did have a nice sparkle at the end from the acidity. The honey sweetness was really the unifying attribute in the cup. It brought together everything into a single “package.”
The Bottom Line
As I was hoping for, the coffee was clean, approachable and very balanced. It was likely the most traditional coffee I’ve tried from Onyx and definitely less complex than many other coffees I’ve tried recently. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing though. I tend towards more exotic and complex coffees, but for the lover of clean and balanced coffees, you’d be hard pressed to find a better one than this.
