Pros

  • Complex, yet approachable
  • Interesting tropical fruit notes

Sans Coffee is a monthly coffee subscription that delivers “100g of the rarest coffees from the world’s most celebrated roasters.”1 Their July 2021 offering was this naturally processed Brazilian coffee from Proud Mary (Australian location). At first when I saw the coffee was from Brazil I was a bit disappointed because many times Brazilian coffees, while delicious, are far from complex and exotic. This coffee put my assumptions about the limits of Brazilian coffee to the test though.

The coffee began with a fragrance that reminded me of pineapple, mango, tropical fruit and chocolate. It was sweet and became richer during brewing. In the flavor I tasted chocolate, melon, subtle yet complex tropical fruit notes and sweet citrus. The acidity was bright and steady with a light, yet silky smooth mouthfeel. The sweetness was fruit-toned and grew much stronger as the coffee cooled and lingered long into the finish.

The Bottom Line

This coffee had a wonderful depth to the flavors and complex profile while still being extremely approachable. It is a coffee someone new to specialty coffee could appreciate and enjoy, while offering a whole world of complexity if you went just a bit deeper. It pushed the limit of what’s possible with a Brazilian coffee and I’m excited to try other Sans coffee offerings in the future.
