As readers of Pull & Pour know, I am a big fan of barrel aged coffee, so I was really excited when I had the chance to try Whiskey Morning Coffee’s barrel aged coffee. Whiskey Morning Coffee started with a group of friends whose family has been in the distilling business for three generations and together thought they’d try their hand at coffee. Needless to say, it was a great idea.
The batch of coffee I tried was aged in bourbon barrels (barrel #24). It began with an incredibly strong bourbon aroma that overwhelmed the senses when the bag is opened. Underneath the strong bourbon notes was a more subtle sweetness.
As I began to drink the coffee, the bourbon notes carried through, but I also tasted oak notes, as well as some flavor notes with some deep roast characteristics. The coffee had a nice apple sweetness underneath it all throughout every sip and ended with a lingering acidity and nice bourbon finish. There was a thick, chocolatey body that paired really nicely with the strong bourbon notes.
I really enjoyed trying this coffee in a variety of ways. I think my favorite method was via a slow immersion cold brew, which did a nice job to mellow out all of the flavors and create an incredibly smooth coffee. It was really great warm via pour over too though.
The Bottom Line
As with all barrel aged coffees, this one is a great one to drink occasionally. I couldn’t have this as an every day coffee, but every few days or so, it made for a big, bold treat. I am actually really excited to try this coffee on a cool Autumn evening or morning in front of a campfire. That seems like the perfect place to try this roasty brew that truly packs a punch.
