Pros
Reverent is a small, but mighty micro-roaster based in California. I’m always a big fan of naturally processed coffees, so I was excited to try one from Uganda, an origin I am not as familiar with for naturally processing. You know those bags of coffees you open up and immediately know you are in for a treat? This was one of those.
The fragrance hits you from the instance you open the bag with an unmistakable blueberry muffin aroma that is strong, fruity and sweet, but also layered with some wonderful notes of chocolate. The berry notes carry over beautifully to the flavor, which was full of berry, honey sweetness and an assortment of berry notes (blueberry, raspberry and blackberry). As the coffee cooled I tasted notes of dried fruit and some more subtle notes of chocolate. The coffee is extremely bright at first, balances out in the middle and then crescendos in a sweet, sparkling finish where the acidity lingers long after you swallow each sip of coffee.
The flavor combination of berry and chocolate is not uncommon in naturally processed coffees, but the way everything comes together is quite unique compared to other naturally processed coffees I have tried. I loved this coffee as a pour over, but it was also incredibly tasty flash brewed as an iced AeroPress where the blueberry aromatics were perfectly preserved.
The Bottom Line
My first experience with Reverent and naturally processed Ugandan coffees have left me incredibly impressed. I can’t wait to try other naturally processed coffees from this origin, as well as what else Reverent has to offer.
