Pros
Amity Brothers Coffee recently released a pair of blends, The Brothers and The Sisters Blend. Both blends use the same naturally processed Honduran coffee as the base. The Brothers Blend layers in a Costa Rican black honey and a washed Ethiopian coffee, while the Sisters Blend layers in a Colombian, Huila. Both are excellent coffees and shining examples of what’s possible with specialty coffee blends. In this review, I focus on specifically the Brothers Blend, my favorite of the two.
The coffee began with a sweet-toned fragrance that reminded me of stone fruit, raspberry, and rich milk chocolate. The flavor featured notes of dark berries, ganache, black cherry, and chocolate. The sweetness was fruit-toned, complex, and syrupy. As the coffee cooled, the sweetness crescendoed and lingered into the finish. The body was heavy with a syrupy, silky mouthfeel and the acidity was crisp and citrus-toned but played a supporting role to some of the other more dominant attributes.
The Bottom Line
The best blends are complex and the unification of the elements creates something better than the sum of its parts. I think that was true for this blend. It was approachable and balanced, while still being complex and intense.
