Pros
My preconceived ideas of what a Sumatra coffee is and can be have changed in the last few months with coffees from High Bank and Quills. This Sumatra from Sway Coffee is the third one of the year I’ve tried and is from the same region as the Quills Sumatra, creating a fun comparison between the two.
This Sumatran coffee begins with a rich and surprisingly sweet aroma where I smelled notes of citrus, vanilla and chocolate. It had a robust, full body that was supported by the medium roast (a bit darker than either of the other two light-roasted Sumatrans I tried earlier this summer). In the flavor I tasted notes of citrus, dark chocolate and subtle baking spices. The acidity was balanced and not overly pronounced. There was a citrus-toned sweetness that presented itself more as the coffee cooled. The complexity was also a thing of beauty. There were many layers to the flavor—many of which I had a hard time even identifying—that added to the depth and complexity of the coffee.
The Bottom Line
Sumatra Kerinci from Sway Coffee joins the ranks of the other two excellent Sumatran coffees I’ve tried this summer. Its complexity in flavor was striking and its slightly darker roast gave it an extremely rich body that I truly enjoyed.
