Pros
Quills Coffee has been one of my favorite roasters ever since I had the opportunity to visit their Indianapolis café a few years back, so when the opportunity presented itself to visit one of their Louisville locations on my way back from Asheville this summer, I didn’t want to miss it. While at their Main Street location, I picked up a bag of this Sumatra Kerinci. Ever since trying High Bank Roasters Sumatra coffee earlier this summer, I’ve been anxious to try some others to see how they compared.
The coffee begins with a rich, chocolatey fragrance full of sweetness and notes of berries. During brewing there were multiple bursts of sweetness, which prepared my mouth for more to come. The taste was an incredible mix of a lot of different flavor notes—none of them dominated, but all of them worked really well together, layered on top of each other and were a lot of fun to explore. In the flavor I tasted notes of chocolate, tropical fruit and berries—all blanketed with a syrupy, rich sweetness. The coffee also had a velvety, thick mouthfeel that covered your mouth with every sip.
I really enjoyed trying this coffee in a variety of brew methods. It worked great in pour over, but also made a crisp, bright espresso where the berry notes were even more pronounced than in the pour over.
The Bottom Line
Sumatra Kerinci was another wonderful experience with Quills coffee and the Sumatra origin. It was rich, sweet, delicious and has me itching to try more coffees from this Indonesian origin.
