Pros

  • Balanced, every day coffee
  • Great flavor notes

Cons

  • Lacks complexity

Boomtown Coffee Roasters is a roaster out of Houston, Texas. They recently redesigned their packaging and as a full-time designer, I always love when great coffee is accompanied by great design. Their new packaging has a cool “sleeve” that integrates with the bag (exposing the sunrise from their logo) and slides off to reveal the full bag design. Good design alone doesn’t cut it though—the coffee has to taste great too. I recently got to try Sonora, their current honey-processed coffee from Costa Rica. It is extremely well-balanced, easy to drink and has great flavor.

The coffee begins with a sweet-toned, medium intensity fragrance that was a bit acidic, but smoothed out after brewing. The flavors I tasted included chocolate and walnuts with sweeter lemon citrus notes coming out as the coffee cooled. It has a smooth body, a bright citrus acidity at the front and a milk chocolate sweetness that carries throughout each sip. The finish is long, slow and smooth. The coffee doesn’t have any incredibly complex or layered elements, but is an incredibly approachable and well-balanced coffee.

The Bottom Line

Sonora fits perfectly in the easy-drinking, well-balanced category of many Central American coffees. It has excellent flavor and works well in a variety of brew methods. With the delightful packaging to accompany it, it’s a great coffee to try out.
