Rabbit Hole Roasters is a roaster based in Montreal, Canada who has a fun brand and a clear curiosity for finding great coffee. I’ve followed their coffee for awhile and was excited to try a few of their classic offerings recently including their Gakuyu’ini Kenya and Sierra Mixteca (as well as combining the two of them to make their Curiouser Blend). While I enjoyed each of the coffees, the Sierra Mixteca really stuck out as a special coffee.

When you first open the bag, you are hit with a nutty fragrance filled with rich, dark chocolate. Upon grinding the coffee, a sweetness emerges, which transforms the dark chocolate to a more decadent milk chocolate fragrance. After brewing, the same notes from the fragrance and aroma carried over and I tasted almonds, milk chocolate, as well as some more subtle dried fruit. The coffee has some nice sweetness that reminded me of chocolate covered almonds. It has a well-rounded acidity and a smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Sierra Mixteca is a really well-rounded and balanced coffee in almost every category. Each of its attributes work well together and none of them overpower the others.

Rabbit Hole Roasters offers a dark roast of this same coffee and I’d be interested to compare the two side-by-side. I thought this version had some nice complexity with the layering of flavors that I’d be afraid you’d lose with a darker roaster.

The Bottom Line

Sierra Mixteca is a well-rounded and balanced coffee that does well to check off almost every box for a quality coffee. It represents its origin of Mexico well and is a great option for anyone who enjoys Central and South American coffees.
