Pros

  • Complex citrus notes
  • Silky smooth body

Cons

  • Lacks intensity of attributes

MAME Coffee is a roaster run by Mathieu Theis and Emi Fukahori based in Zurich, Switzerland. Mathuey and Emi met each other during a coffee competition and decided to quit their corporate jobs to start MAME in 2016. They were the featured roaster with my Yonder subscription in February 2021. The coffee I received as part of my subscription was a washed Kenyan coffee from the Kiambu region.

The coffee began with a lemon citrus and grapefruit fragrance with a subtle creaminess to it. In the flavor I tasted more lemon and grapefruit notes. The coffee had a high acidity, but maintained a nice balance. The acidity lingered into the finish, which featured a nice tartness and the citrus-toned lemon drop sweetness from earlier in the experience. The coffee had a silky smooth mouthfeel, but I did taste some subtle grassiness in the coffee, which can be an issue with Kenyan coffees sometimes.

The Bottom Line

Overall I really enjoyed the complexity of the citrus notes, but wished for more intensity with each of the coffee’s elements and a bit more evolution in each sip.
