Pros
Panamanian coffees have been some of the best I’ve tried over the past few years, so I am always excited to get to try new ones. This Panama coffee from Black Sails was a naturally processed Catuai varietal from the Elida Estate farm.
The coffee began with a fairly mild fragrance that was tropical, fruit-forward and somewhat creamy. The flavor was not as bright or light as other Panamanian coffees I’ve tried and featured creamy and fruit-forward notes of berries and dark chocolate. The body was thick & heavy with a smooth & creamy mouthfeel. The sweetness reminded me of dark chocolate covered berries with some subtle tropical fruit notes. The aftertaste was slightly underdeveloped, but featured some nice chocolate notes. I really enjoyed exploring this coffee in the various brew options and found making it as an iced AeroPress was a favorite for me.
The Bottom Line
While this Panamanian coffee broke the mold a bit from the others I’ve tried recently, it was still quite tasty and the thick, creamy mouthfeel was a favorite attribute for me.
