Pros
While I love almost every style of coffee out there, Ethiopian coffees—especially naturally processed ones—always hold a special place for me because they were my “gateway” into specialty coffee. This natural Ethiopian comes from a micro-roaster out of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Clarity Coffee Roasters.
The coffee begins with a sweet, caramelly fragrance that was a bit malty and full of berry notes. The flavor was full of rich berries and creamy chocolate. It was a bit roasty, but also had a full mouthfeel and syrupy body. The acidity was crisp and steady throughout. The sweetness was caramel-toned with supporting berry notes. The finish featured notes of sweet citrus and lingering acidity.
The Bottom Line
The coffee overall had a lot of elements I’d expect in a natural Ethiopian coffee, but also had a profile that was richer and more syrupy than most. It was a tasty one for sure and I love that delicious coffee isn’t isolated to the “big name” roasters. Small, one-man (or woman) micro-roasters are roasting great coffees that are just as enjoyable as the larger, established roasters.
