Pros

  • Overall structure
  • Lemon citrus and black tea combination

Roots Coffee is a roaster based out of Bangkok, Thailand. I recently had the opportunity to try a variety of their coffees, including a set featuring samples of a wide variety of Thai coffee called “The Spectrum of Thai Coffee.” The coffees within it featured a variety of processing methods, coffee varietals, growing regions and more. The flavor profiles were unique and exciting throughout, but this fully washed coffee from the Chiang Mai region really stood out to me for its overall structure and its lemon citrus & black tea profile.

The coffee began with a bright & light fragrance that reminded me of black tea. The flavor featured some nice citrus-toned acidity and lemon citrus and lemon peel notes. The body was light and tea-like, but also quite structured. Overall the coffee was quite balanced and very clean. As the coffee cooled, the flavor profile opened even more and really featured some nice black tea and lemon notes swirled together. The finish was a bit dry and fairly short.

The Bottom Line

The collection of coffees in the Spectrum of Thai Coffee set was an exciting assortment and really gave a great appreciation of the unique and delicious specialty coffees coming out of Thailand today.
