Pros

  • Exciting and vibrant coffee
  • Nice flow to the coffee in each sip

Cons

  • Could use a bigger body to support other bold attributes

Muzo is a washed Rwandan coffee from 1000 Faces Coffee in Athens, Georgia. I recently featured another coffee from 1000 Faces, Carmona, which has become a recent favorite of mine—Muzo is close behind though.

Muzo takes its name from the washing station where the coffee is pulped, cleaned and prepared for export. You can read more about the amazing details of the cooperative on the 1000 Faces website.

The coffee begins with a strong aroma where I smelled sweet, fruit notes, specifically of apricot. The apricot notes flowed into the flavor that carried some nice bold, chocolate notes with it as well. The coffee hits your mouth each sip with a wonderful, sparkling acidity and a strong, turbinado sugar sweetness. One of my favorite elements in this coffee was the amazing flow it had with every sip. Truly great coffees don’t simply have one powerhouse attribute, but blends them all together to make one single drinking experience that evolves as you drink. Muzo did just that. It began with the strong, fruity aroma, upon tasting the coffee the fruit notes hit you first, but then it evolved into the chocolate notes. The finish contained a nice floral finish with nutty notes of cashews.

The Bottom Line

This big, bold coffee from Rwanda packed a punch—from the fragrance to the finish. The coffee was exciting and delicious to drink and was one I was excited to come back to each morning to try again.
