Pros
The Coffee & Tea Collective recently sent their Four Forties sample pack, which consists of 40 gram samples of four of their current offerings; it is a great, affordable way to sample a variety of their current offerings. Each of the coffees was unique and delicious, but it was the Mexican coffee, Martin Pablo Ortiz Perez, that really stood out. The coffee was the winner of the 2020 Brigada, a competition consisting of coffee from over 30 top-scoring producers spread across Oaxaca.
The coffee begins with a slightly sweet and slightly creamy fragrance of cranberry and almonds. The flavor reminded me strongly of cranberry with a sweet-tart emphasis and an accompaniment of stone fruit and chocolate. There is a tart acidity that reminded me of cranberries or grapefruit, but nothing overpowering. The raw sugar sweetness carried through the same sweet-tart theme and grew stronger as the coffee cooled. The mouthfeel was slightly silky and the finish was fairly short with lingering sweetness.
The Bottom Line
I really enjoyed the unique fruit profile of this coffee. It was unexpected and unlike any Mexican coffee I have tried before. While the 40 gram sample didn’t leave me a lot to play with, I really enjoyed the few brews I was able to get out of it.
