Pros

  • Lime notes throughout
  • Subtle complexity

Father Coffee is a roaster based out of Johannesburg, South Africa. I had heard about their coffee for years and had been itching to try them. Unfortunately the ability to get their coffee in the United States is a bit limited, so I was quite excited when Yonder Coffee announced they would be their featured roaster for November 2020 (it’s reasons like this that I continue love my Yonder subscription!).

The featured coffee for the subscription was this washed Ugandan coffee from the Kyonza Kingha Collective. The coffee began with a subtly sweet and citrus-filled fragrance that was clean and subtle, yet surprisingly complex. The aroma featured much of the same, but had a more floral overture. The flavor was quite interesting with notes of lime zest, raisins and subtle berries. The citrus-toned acidity was pronounced throughout each sip and was complemented by a crisp, citrus sweetness. The body was light with a smooth, almost silky mouthfeel.

I really enjoyed the complexity in this cup. Everything about this coffee was fairly subtle, but carried with it some surprising complexity that took a few brews to really appreciate. Once I did though, I kept wanting to come back for more. I tried the coffee in a variety of pour over brew methods, as well as espresso. It preformed well with everything and the espresso was especially balanced and clean.

The Bottom Line

The unifying characteristic of this Ugandan coffee was definitely the citrus notes (specifically lime) found throughout from the fragrance to the aftertaste. I enjoyed exploring its subtle complexity and am so thankful to have had the opportunity to finally try Father Coffee.
