Disclosure: Pull & Pour received coffee samples for this post, however, as always, all opinions are 100% my own.
Onyx Coffee Lab is one of those roasters that consistently releases top notch coffees. Everything I have tried from them over the years has been incredibly high-quality and this Kenya Kiunyi AA is no different. It joins the growing list of really great Kenyan coffees I’ve had the opportunity to try this season.
The coffee begins with a fragrance that is sweet, rich and floral. I smelled berries, marshmallow and jasmine that all came together to create an incredibly complex and layered aroma. The taste was equally complex and consisted of blackberry, stone fruit and some additional more subtle floral notes. The coffee has a vibrant, rounded body and a rich, decadent sweetness. The acidity is bright at the beginning while not being overwhelming and carries throughout the entire sip.
As always, I tried the coffee in a variety of brew methods including V60, Kalita Wave and espresso. The V60 is where it shined the best, but it also created a really nice espresso that contained the same level of complexity I found in the pour over options.
The Bottom Line
So many of the Kenyan coffees I’ve tried this harvest have had a spectacular depth and complexity—even for a coffee from Kenya. Kenya Kiunyi AA from Onyx Coffee Lab is no different and has quickly risen to be one of my favorite coffees in my pantry at the moment.
