Five & Hoek is a roaster based outside of Chicago and was one of the first roasters I had my eye on after starting my Crema.co subscription. They won my first Crema.co matchup on Instagram, so I clearly wasn’t the only person excited about this coffee.
Kenya Kimaratia AA hits you from the beginning with one of its strongest attributes. The blackberry jam fragrance evolves into an intensely strong lemon-lime aroma during the bloom, which fades into a more nutty aroma later in the brew. It was one of the most complex and evolving aromas I’ve experienced and certainly one of the most exciting attributes of the coffee.
The flavor notes also didn’t disappoint. I tasted dried fruit, berry and sweeter lemon-lime citrus notes as the coffee cooled. The coffee has a juicy body and candied fruit sweetness. It was incredibly complex with lots of evolving attributes. Even with the complexity, it was still a very balanced and clean cup of coffee.
The Bottom Line
I was excited to try Five & Hoek and had high hopes for Kenya Kimaratia AA. It did not disappoint and has continued to be a fun coffee to explore each time I try it. Now I can’t wait to try the other Five & Hoek options on Crema.co.
