Pros
Camber Coffee is a roaster based in the very northwest corner of the United States. I recently had the opportunity to try a variety of their single origin East African coffees, as well as their Mosaic blend. Each of the coffees were quite refined and could warrant its own review. It was this Kenyan Gatugi AA though that specifically stood out as a premiere example of the possibilities within the Kenyan origin.
The coffee’s flavor reminded me of berries, lemon citrus and subtle floral notes. It grew sweeter as the coffee cooled and the berry notes became richer and more pronounced. The flavor was preceded with a rich fragrance of citrus, pineapple and jasmine notes. The mouthfeel was silky with a slightly delicate body. The acidity was strong, but balanced and reminded me of a grapefruit. The sweetness was smooth and rich and reminded me of honey with an underlying berry prominence.
The coffee was a bit more delicate, but did work well in all of the various filter brews. I really enjoyed the complexity of the coffee with its layered flavors and the evolution that happened throughout each sip and as the coffee cooled.
The Bottom Line
This Kenyan Gatugi AA was a true expression of my favorite type of Kenyan coffees. It was sweet, structured and complex. The flavor brought together floral, berry and citrus notes in a wonderful union.
