Pros
While I drink African coffee more than any other region and Tanzania is the 19th largest producer of coffee in the world, I have not had many Tanzanian coffees through the years. It’s northern neighbors of Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Uganda I’ve had more frequently, but Tanzania is an origin that has slipped through the cracks of my coffee drinking experience. For this reason, I was really excited to try this Tanzanian Peaberry coffee from Palma Coffee to see how it compared to other coffees I have had from surrounding countries.
The coffee began with a sweet, citrus fragrance that was bright and reminded me of grapefruit and lemon. During brewing the sweet citrus notes came to the forefront and carried into the flavor. The flavor reminded me of strong lemon citrus with chocolate undertones. The character of the cup reminded me a lot of a Kenyan coffee. The citrus-toned acidity was sharp at first, but mellowed towards the end of each sip and as the coffee cooled. The mouthfeel was juicy with a light and crisp body. The sweetness reminded me of lemon drops with its bright, crisp citrus sweetness.
The Bottom Line
As can probably be inferred from the description above, the citrus profile was really the standout for this coffee. If you enjoy a citrus-forward cup and bright Kenyan coffees, this coffee is one you have to try out.
