Pros

  • Rich, thick sweetness & body
  • Evolution of chocolate notes

Cafe Advocate is a new company based in New York with the goal to get customers coffee roasted at origin directly to you. They are currently working with Bluebird Coffee in Colombia and Chica Bean in Guatemala for their coffees. The idea is to cut a lot of the elements involved in the supply chain to focus on paying more to the farmers, which I love. I tried a Gesha from Colombia, which was delicious, but was a bit more expensive (as Geshas usually are). I wanted to feature this honey processed Guatemalan though that had a wonderfully complex flavor profile and is priced more in line with a “standard” bag of specialty coffee.

The coffee began with a rich chocolate fragrance that was slightly buttery. The flavor followed the same richness and had lovely notes of chocolate, honey and stone fruit. As the coffee cooled, the chocolate notes continued, but evolved. It had a nice citrus acidity and a rounded, smooth mouthfeel. The sweetness was thick like molasses and one of the strong elements in the coffee. The finish featured lingering notes of chocolate and caramel sweetness.

The Bottom Line

The evolution of the flavor (especially chocolate notes) paired with the depth of flavor notes made this coffee not only delicious to drink, but also a lot of fun to explore. I love seeing new companies like Cafe Advocate enter the scene to try to bring innovation to the coffee supply chain and help the people growing the coffee.
