Pros
Whenever someone I respect in the coffee world refers a coffee to me as “one I have to try,” I am always eager to make it happen. That was the case for Honduras Los Lesquines Lot 44 from Máquina Coffee Roasters—from two different people. With two referrals, I knew I needed to try this coffee—and I am glad I did.
Honduras Los Lesquines Lot 44 is a rich, complex coffee with so much depth. It begins with a medium-intensity aroma that includes bittersweet chocolate and deep, rich fruit notes that evolve into sweet cherry during brewing. The cherry carried through to the flavor along with dark chocolate and fresh fig. A flavor note on the bag is “lush,” which I found a bit peculiar initially. After trying the coffee though, lush is a perfect descriptor. Lush seems to rightly encompass the depth and layering of the flavors, as well as the silky body.
My only qualms with the coffee was the acidity (which was bright at the onset, but faded as each sip progressed and as the coffee cooled) and the aftertaste (which was also a bit quick and I wished it lingered a bit more).
The Bottom Line
Honduras Los Lesquines Lot 44 encompasses so much of what I love in the best Central American coffees. It is rich, complex and contains a depth of flavor, which makes it fun and unique to drink every time. There is no doubt this coffee is the best coffee I’ve had from Honduras in a while.
