Pros

  • Incredible sweetness
  • Strong, yet balanced acidity

Atomic Coffee Roasters is a roaster from Boston’s North Shore that has been roasting for over 20 years since 1996 (a pretty impressive feat for a specialty coffee roaster!). I had the privilege of trying their naturally processed Honduran coffee over the past few weeks.

The coffee began with a strong and incredibly sweet fragrance. When I opened the bag it truly reminded me of opening a bag of jolly ranchers from when I was a kid. I also smelled berry and milk chocolate notes, which combined for a truly intoxicating fragrance. As I began to sip the coffee, I immediately noticed the sweetness, which was fruity, syrupy, incredibly pronounced and only grew stronger as the coffee cooled. I also tasted notes of blueberry, raspberry and what, to my astonishment, truly reminded me of watermelon jolly ranchers. The coffee had a light syrupy mouthfeel that coated my mouth, but without too much heaviness. The acidity was distinct, citrus-like and caused me to pucker towards the back of my mouth towards the end of each sip. The aftertaste featured the lingering sweetness and acidity.

The Bottom Line

Honduras Comsa Natural was quite a treat and joined the growing list of solid naturally processed Central American coffees I’ve tried this year. If you enjoy fruit-forward coffees with intense sweetness, you will love this coffee from Atomic Coffee Roasters.
