Pros

  • Rich, full mouthfeel
  • Chocolate covered blackberry flavor

Gigawatt Coffee Roasters is based outside of Chicago, Illinois and recently shared their organic Honduran coffee that (in their words) “drinks like a cola, with smooth vanilla undertones to support the overarching palette of blueberry notes.” It sounded like a pretty amazing description to me.

The coffee began with a rich, sweet fragrance with notes of chocolate and dark berries. The mouthfeel was extremely rich, full and very smooth. In the flavor I tasted notes that reminded me of dark chocolate, vanilla and berries in the second half of each sip. The acidity was fairly consistent throughout and I thought it would have been a bit punchier with the “drinks like cola” description (though in hindsight, I think that might have been referring to the rich and full body). The sweetness was one of my favorite elements with a deliciously rich chocolate-covered berry sweetness. The finish was clean, crisp and fairly quick with notes of chocolate. I enjoyed the play between chocolate and berries throughout and thought it made a really creamy and rich espresso in addition to performing well in every pour over method I tried.

The Bottom Line

This Honduran coffee was delicious, but was a bit different than I expected from the description. The rich, full mouthfeel was an excellent surprise and the chocolate-covered blackberry sweetness was delicious. I did expect a bit more punchy acidity and stronger blueberry notes though. If you enjoy rich, full-bodied coffees that have a lot of depth of flavor though, this is a great one to try.
