Pros

  • Rich, full body
  • Nice evolution throughout the cup

Cons

  • Lacks complexity

Haiti is a unique origin for coffee and makes up a very small global percentage of coffee. Voyage Coffee Roasters partners with Singing Rooster, a “non-profit working to revive the Haitian coffee industry and provide sustainable income for farmers and their families. They’re ‘Better than Fair Trade’ – paying their farmers a staggering $3-4.50/lb.”1 Coffee quality aside, I love supporting businesses that do so much for the coffee farmers.

Haiti Baptiste begins with a peanut butter aroma, which evolves into a cashew and peanut flavor, with a sweet marshmallow undertone that becomes more pronounced as the coffee cools. The acidity was fairly muted, but the body was rich, full and velvety. It has a crispy sweetness that reminded me of the crusted sugar on top of creme brûlée.

The Bottom Line

Haiti Baptiste is a balanced, full body coffee. While it lacks some complexity and depth that I expect for the highest quality beans, it was still a solid coffee and on par with many other Central and South American single-origin coffees.
