Pros

  • Aroma (like a chocolate candy bar)
  • Balanced and creamy

Cons

  • Muted acidity

Oak & Bond is known for their barrel-aged collection, but also consistently has a solid lineup of single-origin coffee options. I recently had a chance to try their Vista Al Bosque, which is from the Huehuetenango region of Guatemala.

The coffee began with likely my favorite attribute—the aroma. It was rich, strong and layered. I smelled dark chocolate, almonds and hazelnut. When I opened the bag, it reminded me of the smell of a Hü hazelnut chocolate bar (if you haven’t had one before, stop and buy one now!). All of the aromas melted together beautifully.

The taste contained some of the same notes as the aroma, specifically the dark chocolate. I also tasted vanilla and a subtle citrus. The acidity was fairly muted and I would have liked a bit more, especially at the front of each sip. It had a medium body, which was smooth and creamy. The coffee had a nice, milk chocolate sweetness that was fairly mild. The finish was smooth and fairly quick, but carried on many of the characteristics of the body.

The Bottom Line

Vista Al Bosque is a solid Guatemalan coffee that fits the standard profile for that region fairly well. It aroma and flavor notes are rich, decadent and blend together very well. It will remind you of enjoying a delicious hazelnut chocolate bar—not a bad thing at all if I do say so myself.
