Pros

  • Balanced & approachable

Cons

  • Hay/earthy aroma at brew
  • Missed raspberry note

Guatemala Santa Isabel comes from the South Dakota roaster, Coffea Roasterie. The coffee hails from the Cobán region of Guatemala, which is known for its distinct fresh fruit notes, well-balanced body and pleasant aromas. While this coffee didn’t fit that profile exactly, it did come very close.

The coffee began with a sweet fragrance that included notes of milk chocolate, tangerine, as well as subtle notes of strawberry. During the brew, I smelled some astringent notes of hay or earth, which seemed to contrast the fragrance from before, as well as the flavor after. In the flavor I tasted lemon/citrus, milk chocolate and stone fruit. The raspberry note listed in the flavor profile was distinctly missing for me and I think it would have helped the coffee align with the expected profile from Cobán even more. The acidity was spot on and was bright and full of citrus. The medium body was smooth and extremely well-balanced. The finish was fairly quick, but did have some lingering acidity.

The Bottom Line

Some of the notes above may be overly critical because the coffee was quite delicious. It was exactly what I expect in a Guatemalan coffee and another great hit off of my Crema.co playlist.
