Pros

  • Unexpected acidity
  • Delicious flavor & aroma

Copper Door Coffee Roasters is Denver’s only 100% female owned coffee roaster and joins the long list of Denver-area roasters I’ve quickly come to love. I recently had the chance to try a few of their coffees—all of which were top-notch. The one I was most excited about was this Guatemalan coffee from the Huehuetenango region. It is fair trade, organic and is 100% woman grown.

The coffee begins with a strong, creamy fragrance of chocolate and almonds. As I began to brew the coffee, I caught a wonderful burst of lemon citrus notes at the bloom which carried through to the flavor where I tasted lemon-lime, chocolate and raisins. It was extremely creamy and smooth, yet had a wonderful burst of citrus acidity. The acidity came as a delightful surprise and reminded me a lot more of an African coffee than a Central American one. The sweetness was creamy and reminded me of rich, decadent chocolate. The finish was fairly quick, but the acidity did linger a bit. The coffee worked equally well for pour over & espresso.

The Bottom Line

Guatemala Huehuetenango CODECH delighted and surprised. It was bright, sweet and delicious—the perfect combination for any coffee. Everything came together to create one of the best Central American coffees I’ve had recently. I was very impressed with what this and all of the Copper Door coffees had to offer and I’m excited to try more of the roasts in the months to come.
