Pros
Some of the best coffees I’ve had over the last few years have been geishan coffees. It is sometimes difficult to parse through the geishan offerings available to determine which coffees are the top quality—and which ones are worth what can be a hefty price tag. That’s why I am always so excited to find a geishan coffee that is both high-quality and well-priced. This Guatemala El Aceituno from Kafiex Roasters out of Vancouver checks both those boxes.
Before even brewing the coffee, the aromatics hit you in the face. They are big, bold, and sweet with notes of dark red fruits and berries coming to the forefront. The flavor profile is dominated by sweet-toned, punchy fruit notes that reminded me of pomegranate and raspberries, but also some underlying black tea. As the coffee cooled, some sweet citrus notes start to emerge as well.
The coffee has a medium-full mouthfeel and overtakes your mouth with every sip. It was well-balanced, clean, and wonderfully sweet with a fruit-toned sweetness that was prominent throughout the entire sip and lingered long into the finish.
This coffee is unique from many geishas in that it isn’t light and floral, as they tend to be in many cases. It has a heavier mouthfeel than many, but does have the distinguished sweetness and complex profile I associate with a geisha and was a true pleasure to enjoy after every brew.
The Bottom Line
Finding a delicious geishan coffee that has such depth to its profile is hard to do. Finding one that checks all of the boxes and is under $25/12oz is nearly impossible. This Guatemala El Aceituno Geisha at $22/12oz is one of the best values for a Geshian coffee I’ve ever found.
