Junto Coffee is a new coffee roaster located in Taylors, South Carolina. They opened in late 2018, so they are only a few months old. I followed along as they prepared for opening last year and was so excited when they opened their doors. I haven’t been able to visit their café yet, but the space looks amazing (see at the end of the post). I was anxious to try some of their coffee, so I was excited to receive the Burundi Gishubi 105 reviewed below, as well as their Colombia Los Huilenses and Ethiopia Hambela (reviews coming soon).
The Burundi Gishbui 105 has a wonderful complexity and depth to the flavors. There are nice fruit notes, but more subtle than many other African coffees I’ve tried. I wasn’t able to detect the chamomile notes they mention, but I always find tea notes like that harder to parse out. The coffee has a wonderful brightness that hits you right away as you begin to sip. It has a strong, rich sweetness that carries through the aftertaste and really helps to unify the cup.
The only area I found the coffee a bit lacking was the fragrance and aroma—both in intensity and complexity. Neither were bad, but given how complex the flavors were, I expected the aroma to present itself a bit better.
The Bottom Line
If you like African coffees, this is a great, high-quality one to try. In addition, it is a great way to try and support a coffee/roaster you likely haven’t tried before.
