My experiences with Geisha coffees have been mixed up to this point; given their high price point, I feel they have often times disappointed and underwhelmed. As such, I went into this one with cautious optimism.
The coffee begins with a sweet and unique fragrance of almond, floral notes and some fruit notes I had a hard time identifying. The fragrance was definitely unique, but didn’t necessarily overwhelm me. As I began sipping the coffee, I tasted similar notes from the aroma including, almond, honey sweetness and apple. There were multiple other flavor notes that seemed to come and go throughout each sip that I had a hard time identifying. The coffee has a nice acidity that is present, but not overpowering. The body is delicate and yet fully envelopes your mouth and senses. The finish is sweet and lingers in your mouth.
This coffee was incredibly complex and unique. I didn’t appreciate it initially, but the longer I drank it, the more I noticed attributes I hadn’t before. Flavor notes would seem to come and go and evolve not only within each sip, but also as the coffee changed temperatures. The coffee almost felt alive as it continued to change and evolve. I went from being skeptical at the first sip to being very impressed by the end of the cup.
The Bottom Line
At $49 for 12 ounces, this coffee is definitely pricey. After finishing it though, that price point seems more justified. It is an incredibly complex coffee that was an adventure to drink. It was one of the most interesting coffees I have had in a long time and if you have the budget, I think is worth a try.
