Finca La Bendición, Honduras – Marcalino Coffee

Recently I’ve really been loving the story behind the coffee I’ve been drinking as much as the coffee itself. Marcalino Coffee has that kind of story. Doris, the owner of Marcalino Coffee, grew up in Honduras and moved to the United States six years ago. She grew up in the town of Marcala, a town well-known in Honduras for its high-quality coffee. Her family has been involved in cultivating coffee for several generations and Doris grew up picking coffee cherries off the tree during harvest times. Doris began Marcalino Coffee in an effort to share Honduran coffee culture with others. She’s initially focused on buying specialty grade coffee directly from her family’s farm in Honduras, Finca La Bendición. It was this coffee I recently got to try and I’m excited to share my review of below.

The coffee had an amazing flavor of chocolate, apple, subtle baking spices and an undertone of dark berries and stone fruit. The flavor was preceded by a crisp aroma of chocolate and subtle citrus. The body was smooth and the acidity was fairly muted and steady throughout. I really enjoyed the sweetness of the cup, which was rich, chocolate-toned and supported with undertones of fruit. The finish was fairly quick with lingering chocolate notes. I really enjoyed the layering of flavors in the cup and the coffee was incredibly balanced and approachable.

The Bottom Line

This coffee managed to strike the perfect balance between a balanced, approachable cup and a bright, exciting one. While there was enough flavor complexity to require some digging to uncover it all, it was also a coffee you could sip without paying too much attention and really enjoy.
