Farewell Coffee Roasters is a small batch craft coffee company located in Bend, Oregon. They sent a sample of their current single-origin offering from Colombia and a blend of their Ethiopia and Peru single-origins. I almost always choose a single-origin over a blend, but in this case even though the Colombia was delicious, their Ethiopia/Peru blend captured my attention.

The coffee starts off with a more mild aroma featuring strawberry most predominately. The flavor carries on with a similar trend. The strawberry notes were most pronounced, but it also had some roasted notes as undertones. It has a wonderful acidity that hits you right at the beginning and carries nicely through each sip.

I thought this was a great coffee because it was so balanced and approachable. So many of the coffees I love are bold, fruity and bright. While those coffees align with my preferences, they aren’t for everyone. This blend does a really nice job melding the great attributes of a light-roasted naturally-processed coffee from Ethiopia (with its bright acidity and fruity flavor notes) with a more balanced, medium-roasted coffee from Peru (with its dark chocolate flavor notes and deeper sweetness). The combination creates a really well balanced coffee that is easy to drink.

The Bottom Line

While this coffee didn’t have any in-your-face flavor notes or amazingly unique attributes, it was such a great coffee all around. It is a coffee almost anyone could brew and enjoy—regardless of your coffee preference.
