Pros

  • Nice mix of tropical fruit and berries

Cons

  • Not much unexpected

Augie’s Coffee is one of Crema.co’s latest addition to the growing list of roasters. I’m always excited to try a new roaster, so I was quick to add them to my playlist. Augie’s features a fun, playful brand centered around roasting great coffee for dog (& cat) people. I picked up a bag of their current naturally processed Ethiopian coffee, which is always my baseline to try with new roasters since it is one of my favorite styles.

The coffee began with a very sweet, fruity fragrance with notes of raspberry; in the bloom I smelled a burst of lemon citrus. In the flavor I tasted a variety of berry notes (raspberry, blueberry) and tropical fruit (pineapple). The coffee was bright, but not as much as I’d except for a naturally processed Ethiopian coffee. It had a smooth, medium body and was balanced and clean. The sweetness was fruit-toned and builds into the aftertaste, which has a lingering sweetness and acidity. The coffee performed well in the variety of pour over methods I tried and pulled a really nice, sweet shot of espresso.

The Bottom Line

I can’t complain with my first experience with Augie’s Coffee. While the coffee wasn’t incredibly complex or unexpected, it was certainly tasty. I can’t wait to try more coffees from Augie’s in the future.
