Big Shoulders Coffee is a roaster based in Chicago, Illinois. They always have an impressive lineup of coffees featuring many unique ones and many with 90+ scores from CoffeeReview.com. I recently had a chance to try this washed Ethiopian and was quite impressed.
The coffee began with a clean & sweet fragrance that reminded me of bright citrus, chocolate, and subtle florals. The flavor featured strong notes of sweet citrus paired with nutty chocolate; dark berry notes were prominent undertones throughout. The acidity was clearly citrus-toned and a bit more subdued at higher temperatures, but became more pronounced as it cooled. The sweetness reminded me of lemon drops paired with dark chocolate. It was a lovely combination to say the least. The coffee had a flowery finish with a lingering citrus sparkle.
The Bottom Line
This coffee was simply delightful. A clean yet complex washed Ethiopian is always a favorite for me and this one was one of the better ones I’ve had recently. The evolution as it cooled and the pairing of sweet lemon and rich chocolate throughout made this a brew I really enjoyed.
