Sump Coffee is a hometown favorite here in St. Louis. They are widely regarded as one of the best shops in the city—and the entire country. They consistently roast some of the best coffees around.
As I began this review I couldn’t believe I hadn’t featured a coffee from Sump before. El Salvador Hondurita is a good one to start with; it is one of the best ones I’ve had from them.
The fragrance of the coffee is intense and has some really nice berry notes. The flavor has some amazing fruit notes as well and I tasted raspberry, strawberry and black currant. One of the flavor notes provided by Sump is tomato, which surprised me initially. After tasting the coffee, I can absolutely see why they included it. While I am not sure I necessarily tasted tomato, there were definitely some savory flavor notes that had similarities to tomato in acidity and profile.
As you can see from the rating this coffee scored well in all areas. As I was trying to think of some negative elements from the coffee I really couldn’t find anything that stood out. It was a really solid coffee through and through. My favorite element was definitely the complexity and depth of flavors though. The mix of sweet notes through the berry and the more savory notes created a really interesting combination that was fun to explore every time I drank it.
The Bottom Line
This is absolutely a coffee worth trying. While it plays more to the lighter, fruitier coffee profile found in naturally processed coffees, it had elements that a more balanced coffee drinker would enjoy.
