Pros
Naturally processed coffees have so much potential and align with my personal coffee preferences, so I am always excited to try naturally processed coffees from different origins. I’ve tried a few honey-processed coffees from Costa Rica, but this was one of the (if not the) first naturally processed coffee I’ve had the opportunity to try from Costa Rica.
The coffee began with a sweetly rich fragrance of blackberry and other deep berry notes. As I began to brew the coffee, there was a great fleeting aroma of sweet lemon citrus at the bloom, which was a special treat. In the flavor I tasted notes of dark fruit, berry and blackberry—all of which were deep, rich and sweet just like the fragrance. The flavor continued to sweeten as the coffee cooled and it had a balanced acidity that grew throughout each sip and ended in the lingering finish. The coffee was incredibly well balanced and approachable and had a decadent berry sweetness.
The Bottom Line
As my first exposure to a naturally processed Costa Rican coffee, I was incredibly impressed with this coffee. It was sweet, rich and deeply complex while still very approachable. One of the flavor notes is “blackberry cola,” which I found amusing at first. After trying the coffee a variety of times, I think that is a perfect description of the flavor. I think this coffee would appeal to a wide range of coffee lovers and is definitely one worth checking out.
