Pros
Ethiopia is my favorite origin and I’ve had some truly stellar Ethiopian coffees through the years. So when I say this auction lot Champions Reserve GSV.RSV.4 from Gesha Village was likely one of the top 3-4 Ethiopian coffees I’ve ever had, it carries some weight.
This coffee was part of the 2022 Pride of Gesha auction from Gesha Village that was held in early July. This coffee was in their highest rated tier (Champions Reserve), had a cupping score of 90.45 (that’s crazy good for anyone not familiar with SCA scoring), and ultimately sold for $122.75/lb (unroasted) to Grand Cru Coffee China.
The coffee began with a sweet, complex fragrance of honeysuckle, citrus, and strong florals. The flavor was an explosion of intensity with notes of jasmine, honey, and citrus. It had a beautifully crisp acidity that was intense and citrus-toned. Its body was structured with a silky smooth, light mouthfeel. It had a citrus & honey sweetness that was very pronounced. Every sip finished with lingering acidity and rich sweetness.
The Bottom Line
This coffee was truly incredible and deserved to be in its exclusive tier and price point. It was so wonderfully complex and absolutely delicious, it is on the short list of coffees I could drink every single day and never get bored. The only problem is given its high price point & limited quantity, most people won’t have a chance to try this delicious coffee.
